Akamai Lands $11.6B Anthropic Deal: AI's New Infrastructure Dark Horse
While everyone watches Nvidia, the real AI infrastructure money is quietly flowing to an unlikely winner

Ticker Ratings
Everyone is staring at the GPU scoreboard while $AKAM just quietly walked out with the trophy. Akamai Technologies surged as much as 20% in premarket after securing a seven-year, $11.6 billion deal with Anthropic to provide CPU-based cloud computing infrastructure. That is the largest contract in Akamai's history, and it landed with the subtlety of a freight train.
Here is the part that should make GPU bulls at least flinch: analysts are flagging that CPU-based infrastructure actually carries better margins than the GPU buildout everyone has been hyperventilating over. TD Cowen went bullish immediately, noting that industrywide compute shortages put Akamai in pole position to win more cloud infrastructure contracts. The stock is already up 26% year to date before this deal even hit the tape. That is not a sleeping giant, that is a giant that just woke up and ordered coffee.
Zoom out and this deal fits a bigger narrative unfolding across the AI landscape. A Bloomberg podcast this week described substrates as the new gold in the semiconductor race, with inter-component communication speed now the actual bottleneck in AI compute performance. The market keeps hunting for the next Nvidia while the real choke points quietly shift. Akamai just positioned itself at one of those choke points, except on the software infrastructure side rather than silicon.
The bear case is real though. Akamai's $11.6 billion revenue commitment is tied almost entirely to Anthropic's survival and growth. One RiskReversal podcast this week pointed out the uncomfortable truth that OpenAI is projected to burn approximately $300 billion over the next three to four years with no clear earnings basis. Anthropic is not OpenAI, but the category risk is the same: what happens if the AI revenue models do not materialize and these companies stop writing massive infrastructure checks? Akamai's new golden goose is only as healthy as its AI customer base.
Meanwhile the broader market backdrop is not exactly rolling out a red carpet. The 10-year Treasury yield hit 5.11%, Goldman Sachs Asset Management is publicly underweight the largest AI borrowers, and consumer inflation expectations just jumped to 4.6% from 4.0% a month ago per the University of Michigan survey. Borrowing to fund AI infrastructure just got measurably more expensive, and the bond market is making that point loudly.
Still, Akamai just proved that the AI infrastructure trade is wider than most people's portfolios suggest, and being the company Anthropic trusts with its compute backbone is not a bad place to be when the AI spending wave has $10.3 trillion projected in US capital expenditure through 2032. Sometimes the dark horse was just warming up.
